Nehalem-EX is Intel's new server processor for systems using two or more processors and keeping the Intel's Xeon 5500 series up to date. The Xeon 5500 series already contained Nehalem-based server processors but these only supported systems with dual sockets. Nehalem-EX can be used in systems with up to 8 processors, and with 8 physical cores and 16 threads there is potential for creating servers with great parallel power.
Now that Intel has unveiled its new server processor it has published a short video presentation of Nehalem-EX where it shows an octo-processor system with 64 physical cores and 128 threads, which is really pushing the limits of the Windows task manager.
The server has a total of 192MB share cache with 24MB for each processor and according to Intel the memory bandwidth of the new MP platform (multiple processors) will be 9 times higher than the current Xeon 7400 series. At the same time, database performance has improved by a factor of 2.5x.
As previous reported Nehalem-EX will go into mass production in the second half of 2009 which means it is still uncertain when the first servers will become available for purchase.
