More on AMD Phenom II X4 WKR Black Edition
Written by Andreas G 23 June 2009 20:15

Earlier this month pictures of a new Phenom II processor from AMD appeared, with "Phenom II 42 TWKR Black Edition" engraved. It was rumored to be a special overclocking edition with greater margins than the flagship Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition. We still don't have confirmation but AMD's mystic processor is already a great PR hype for AMD's processor family. We have managed to dig up some more unconfirmed information that might confirm its very existence.

According to Maingear founder Wallace Santos AMD is planning an official state on June 30 and being one of few, as we know, that has the processor Santos has published a not so hot boot screenshot showing the name of the processor.

He reveals that the processor is running on an ASUS Crosshair III Formula motherboard with 4GB Kingston DDR3 memory and cooled by CoolIT Domino A.L.C water cooling system. The latter could be an important detail as some believe AMD's TWKR processor could be a so called "high leakage" version of Phenom II X4 955 BE.

High leakage processors have tendencies of leaking a lot of current and emit more heat. Therefore these processors rarely reach stores. Intel have been using high leakage processors for overclocking events for several years and even if it may sounds contradictory, high leakage processors have tendencies to reach higher frequencies, with proper cooling.

AMD has used handpicked high leakage Phenom II processors for its latest overclocking events where it has presented clock frequency records one after another. It has used liquid nitrogen, sometimes even liquid helium, to lower the temperature close to absolute zero.

If AMD Phenom II 42 TWKR BE is a high leakage processor it's not certain you will notice much of a difference from other retail models before you start using more exotic cooling, which might explain why he is using water cooling.

Either way, AMD will reveal more about its new processor model on June 30 and hopefully we will get a better picture of its overcocking potential and performance.
