Memory maker Active Media has announced more than few oddly shaped memories, often in cooperation with World Wildlife Fund (WWF). Recently we reported on the USB Polar Bear and now its time for an Antarctic animal to join the group, the penguin. Active Media launched the USB Penguin earlier this year but it has now released one with a penguin on the inside, Ubuntu Linux.
The official mascot of Linux is a penguin called Tux and it will be hard to find a better suited memory for installing Ubuntu Linux 9.04 on. Since the operating system comes installed you can boot a computer directly from the memory, even without a harddrive installed, or use it as an aid in case the primary operating system goes down.
BLU drives (bootable Linux USB) allow booting into Ubuntu Linux from the USB drive regardless of what operating system is installed on the hard drive. Because the hard drive will still be fully accessible when booting from the BLU drive, it's an excellent disaster recovery solution in the event of problems with the operating system on the primary hard drive, because important data files on the hard drive can be backed up onto the BLU drive or another USB storage device.
Active Media's USB memory is shaped like the Emperor Penguin and comes in five sizes; 1GB, 2GB, 4GB, 8GB and 16GB. Prices vary between $13 up to $44 for the 16GB model, and 5% of the cost goes directly to the World Wildlife Fund.
