PlayStation 3 Slim
Written by Andreas G 24 August 2009 19:37

Sony officially announced the new slim version of PlayStation 3. The home electronics giant has managed to optimize power consumption and minimize heat development quite a bit since the launch and the time has come for the much slimmer console to arrive. PS3 Slim sports pretty much the same hardware as the latest 80GB model, with the renowned Cell processor in the center, but the new slim model is 32% smaller than the original PS3, while it also consumes 34% less power.

Sony have made several changes to PS3 Slim besides the design. First of all, it has removed the option of installing Linux, which restricts the flexibility of the console somewhat. Though version 3.00 of PlayStation 3's firmware sports plenty of goodies that should more than well compensate for this.

PS3 Slim has been granted some additional functionality such as Bravia Sync support and 120GB SATA harddrive. The new model will also be quieter, especially when playing av Blu-ray movies, but also maintain a lower level of noise when gaming and installing applications or games.

The new console is cheaper, even though it sports a larger harddrive, than the 80GB model of PlayStation 3 we have today. Also the standard models of the video game console has become cheaper, but the question is if not most people will wait for the Slim version anyway.

Except from the loads of press pictures of PS3 Slim, Engadget has also published some comparing pictures with PS3 and Xbox 360.
