Blu-ray to remain the minority in 2013
Written by Andreas G 02 September 2009 18:33

Even though Blu-ray players are selling better and better, and the numbers of movies increase by the minute, Blu-ray devices for PCs are not selling well. Analyst estimates that in 2013 only 16% of all sold PCs will have a Blu-ray drive, the number is 3.6% for this year. DVD-RW will continue to be the main optical format for most computers throughout 2013, says Michael Yang, Senior Analyst for Storage and Mobile Memory at iSuppli. The biggest reason for this is cost:

"The cost issue is amplified by the fact that the library of content is so small that there really isn't a reason for users to switch at the moment," Yang said. And while this is changing and studios are rolling out more Blu-ray content every week, there remains a long way to go."

Another reason for the slower than usual transition to a new optical format, e.g. CD to DVD, is that the area of use isn't as interesting for those who are watching movies on screens and speakers with lower video resolutions and less audio channels than the high quality signals Blu-ray can offer.
