Processors with integrated graphics circuits are getting close as Intel is expected to announce multiple models soon. The next generation Atom processor (Pineview), Clarkdale and Arrandale that all will house a version of Intel's integrated GMA graphics circuit. Competitor AMD has been talking about integrated graphics for many years, in relation to the Fusion project, where CPU and GPU would meet on the same chip. It started back in 2005 (in public) but it might be coming to market in 2011 with the LIano processor.
AMD LIano is said to be a processor with integrated GPU core while the CPU will be either dual or quad-core. Unlike Intel's first integrated processors AMD LIano will not use a separate GPU die in the processor. LIano will integrate both CPU and GPU in the same silicon and be a genuine integrated GPU+CPU.
Clock frequencies and exact performance are far from ready to be revealed or even predicted, but DDR3 memory and 32nm technology have been mentioned. Power consumption is said to be between 20W and 55W depending on configuration and platform.
According to AMD the launch of the mobile platform will happen in the middle of 2011, which much like the rest of AMD processor plans feel very far away.
Interestingly, this will be enough time for AMD to implement full support for DirectX 11. Hopefully there will also be enough performance to make use of the technology.
