AMD is beating the PR drum for its coming Radeon HD 5800 series and DirectX 11 gets the biggest beats. AMD's RV870 GPU will become the first DirectX 11 graphics circuit and it hopes to lure many buyers through the new standard. DirectX 11 promises many new and exciting effects but also better performance, but there are two obstacles for AMD. First of all no operating system with DirectX 11 support, but this will be remedied with Windows 7 on October 22nd.
The bigger problem is the lack of games using the new 3D standard and this is where AMD has done its best to improve things, by simply throwing money at the problem.
According to sources AMD paid Codemasters, the developers of Dirt 2, to update the engine with DirectX 11 support. Whether AMD has thrown money in other directions is uncertain but since Dirt 2 looks to be delayed until December it might be for the better to find some more cash to spend.
As consumers we can't complain about the added value, but other game developers might feel neglected.
